The Blount County Schools Health Services Department is responsible for school nurse coordination and training, assisting with annual screenings and teaching students to be as healthy as possible.
School nurses are charged with taking care of students who have medical needs, injuries and/or illnesses at school. Additionally, they are often involved in referral decisions for students, and assist with health screenings every year.
Each BCS school has a nurse present on most days. BCS elementary schools employ Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), who are supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN) that works at the nearest middle school facility. At the high school level, each building has an RN and an LPN. The district also employs LPNs who specifically work in special education classrooms as teacher's assistants/nurses.
