Kid Konnections is a program that is unique to Blount County Schools. It has been in place for many years, previously known as Read for Success. The program’s mission is to seek personal connections between community volunteers and elementary students who need an extra boost in their reading skills. Each volunteer reading mentor receives one hour of training on how to build relationships with students and various reading techniques. School coordinators match these mentors with students who need an extra boost in reading and who would benefit from purposeful interactions with caring adults. Volunteers are asked to commit to spending about an hour a week reading with their students. No expertise is needed to be a volunteer reading mentor. A caring attitude for children is the only skill required!

Another component of Kid Konnections is the Maryville College Community Work Study Program. This program supplies paid college students who work in Blount County Schools on a part time basis. These college students assist the classroom teacher with building reading skills in students. Collaboration between the schools and the program coordinator for Maryville College enables these college students to interview and train for this work experience so that they are well prepared for their school work setting.

Do you have an extra hour a week to be of service to the students of Blount County? Would you like to have one of the most rewarding experiences of your life? If so, please contact Linda Carraway, Coordinator of Kid Konnections for Blount County Schools to schedule training and to get started.
