History: Reticulum
is another constellation in the Southern Hemisphere first described by
Abbe Nicholas Louis de Lacaille between the years 1751 and 1753.
When considering the translation of Reticulum as a "net," we must be careful:
this constellation does not represent a net or mesh like we would associate
with fishing, for example. Rather, this constellation was meant to
describe the grids and axes in a particular kind of eyepiece used in optical
instruments -- a reticle.
Since it is a new constellation (and since such a device was unknown to
the Ancient Greeks and Romans), there is no classical mythology associated
with this constellation.
