History: Originally, this area of the sky was associated with the Centaur, which is located to the West of modern-day Lupus. The Centaur was often depicted carrying an animal, or an animal hanging off a pole held by the Centaur. It was not until the renaissance that this unidentified animal was described as a wolf and became its own constellation. Since it is a fairly new constellation, and was not a separate one during the classical era, there is no classical mythology associated with the Wolf.
