Indus (Ind)
"The Indian"

Location:  R.A. = 21h, Dec. = 55 S

History:  Like many of the inconspicuous Southern Sky constellations, this constellation was first described by Pieter Dirkszoon and Frederick de Houtman -- the Dutch navigators who mapped part of the Southern Hemisphere sky during the years of 1595 through 1597.  Being a modern constellation, it has no classical mythology associated with it.  It has been suggested that this constellation was conceived because of the encouragement provided by the American Indians for the exploration of the Southern Hemisphere by the Europeans.
