Mythology:
Cetus is the monster sent by Poseidon to attack Ethiopia because the Queen
of Ethiopia, Cassiopeia, had been arrogant enough to announce that she
was as beautiful as the Sea Nymphs. Cetus had the scaly body of a
fish, the coils of a serpent, and the forelegs of a land animal.
Cassiopeia's husband, King Cepheus, asked the oracle of Ammon how to ward
off the monster Cetus. Cepheus was told that he must sacrifice his
virgin daughter Andromeda to Cetus. Andromeda was chained to the
rocks off the Mediterranean coast for the monster.
Fortunately for Andromeda, Perseus arrived to save her from Cetus.
He slew Cetus and rescued Andromeda from her chains. Later, Perseus
and Andromeda were married.
