| Roger Williams established Providence in northeastern Rhode Island as a haven for English Puritans wishing to escape religious persecution. The city grew as a port and a center for textile and jewelry manufacturing. Now it is the capital and largest city of Rhode Island. Despite extensive development in the city, many of its historic colonial buildings remain. |
