We have several new scholarship applications in the Counseling Office. We will put out a newsletter next week, but in the mean time please let your seniors know about the following opportunities, as deadlines are quickly approaching and there is a lot of free money out there!

Coca Cola Scholarship
October 31 deadline– Each year the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation awards 250 achievement-based scholarships. Fifty (50) awards are for $20,000, payable in equal installments over a four-year period, and the remaining 200 awards are for $10,000 also available over a four-year period. The scholarship can be used for any line of study at any accredited US college or university. www.coca-colascholars.org

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Scholarship
February 15 deadline.- One $5,000 scholarship to be awarded based on an essay question. Pick up applications in the Counseling Center or go to www.ohtheplaces.org.

Ron Brown Scholar Program
November 1 deadline – A minimum of ten African American students will be selected for this renewable scholarship valued at $40,000 for four years. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participated in community service, and demonstrate financial need.. Pick up application in Counseling Center or go to www.ronbrown.org

Outstanding Students of America
October 10 deadline.– $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students who have at least a 3.0 GPA and have demonstrated community involvement. A biography and essay are required. Pick up application in Counseling Center or go to www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com

QuestBridge College Match
September 30 deadline. – This program offers an opportunity for outstanding low-income students to gain admission and full scholarships to some of the nation’s top-ranked colleges. Go to http://application.questbridge.org/ to apply.

Will to Win Scholarship:

Deadline: April 30, 2009

. This one-time $5,000 scholarship is for students who are disciplined, determined, and successful in managing their asthma. Applicants should be able to demonstrate excellence in one of five categories: performing arts, visual arts, community service, athletics, or science. Applications are available in the Counseling Center.


Dennis Buford Heath Loudon County Education Foundation Scholarship:

Deadline: April 30, 2009

This $1000 scholarship is available to any “poor and deserving student” graduating from a high school in Blount County who plans to enroll in a 2 or 4-year college or university. Applications are available in the Counseling Center.


TMSDC Education Foundation Scholarship:

Deadline: April 22, 2009

This scholarship is available to students in East Tennessee who have a minimum 2.5 GPA and a minimum 18 ACT score (score must be at least 18 on all subscores). Thirty-four scholarships will be awarded to students in the Knoxville area, representing $82,900 in scholarships. Applications can be found at www.tnmarinefamily.org/fallen.html.


Lambuth University Scholarships:

Lambuth University’s men’s basketball team is offering scholarships to fill the following positions: JV/Developmental Team Leader, Student Managers, Student Assistants Coach, Video Coordinator, and Student Assistant Athletic Trainers. Innovation Valley Technology Council 2009 Scholarship Application Deadline: April 20, 2009
The Innovation Valley Technology Council is a partnership of Technology 2020, Knoxville Area Chamber Partnership, Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, Blount County Chamber of Commerce and Morristown Chamber of Commerce.

The mission of the Innovation Valley Technology Council is to build an interactive association of businesses and entrepreneurs who will drive the region’s economy in the 21st century.  As a resource organization interested in helping companies prosper and in promoting the use of technology to meet their business needs, the Innovation Valley Technology Council is a key component to area economic growth. 

Guidelines
:
One scholarship will be offered to a graduating high school senior of public, private or home schools in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Roane, Sevier, and Union Counties in Tennessee. Student must have a current 3.0 minimum GPA to apply. The scholarship is intended to support undergraduate study for a student who is passionate about technology.  The recipient must be admitted or plan to enroll in an accredited program at a local state or private 2 or 4 year college or a university in East Tennessee.

Applicants need to submit a letter of recommendation from one of the following:  high school guidance counselor, a faculty advisor, a teacher, employer, or a recognized professional. The scholarship award is for $2,500 presented to the student and the institution they will attend for the 2009-2010 academic year.  If applicable, a member of the Innovation Valley Technology Council’s Executive Committee will present the scholarship to the student during their school’s recognition ceremony.  In addition, the recipient will also be invited and recognized at an Innovation Valley Technology Council luncheon.


Selection Criteria
:
The Innovation Valley Technology Council scholarship selection will be based on the applicant’s demonstration of the following criteria :

  1. Academic promise and achievement
  2. Enrollment in a technology-related curriculum at a local college or university
  3. Letter of recommendation
One page typed essay (min. 400 words) demonstrating your passion for technology and specifically how you would use technology in East Tennessee in one of the following areas to:

·         Improve technology access to lower income areas
·         Enhance  K-12 education
·         Create more jobs
·         Improve recreational activities or experiences

 


DENSO Manufacturing of Tennessee was pleased to offer a scholarship to one of Heritage High School's graduating Seniors for the fifteenth year. The DENSO Scholarship is a one-time award of $750 for a student chosen by the faculty of Heritage High School.

The following criteria was used in making their selection:

  1. Cumulative GPA of 3.2
  2. Plan to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college or university.
  3. 50% of selection based on academic achievement, 50% of selection financial need

Teachers emailed the guidance office any students they wanted to nominate for this scholarship. The deadline was Tuesday, March 10th. A second email was then be sent out the next week for all teachers to vote on their top selections for the scholarship.


  1. Coach Andes Memorial Scholarship: Coach Andes taught in the Blount County School system for 35 years, with his last 8 years serving as an Assistant Principal at HHS. His wife offered a one-time $1000 scholarship in his memory. Teachers chose 1 or 2 students they wanted to nominate for this award, based on the following:
    • Minimum 2.5 GPA
    • Prefer a student pursuing Math or Engineering education
    • Prefer an athlete
    • Financial need is not a consideration
    • Character
    • Community Service / Involvement
  2. Lance Russell Scholarship: This one-time $1000 scholarship is in memory of a former HHS student whose mother taught at HHS. Teachers chose 1 or 2 students they wanted to nominate for this award, based on the following:
    • Preference to males who plan to attend UT (but not required)
    • Financial Need
    • Character
    • Community Service / Involvement

The nominations for these 2 awards were submitted Wednesday, March 11th.
