Course Description: In United States History, students study the history of the United States: Reconstruction to the present. The six social studies standards of essential content knowledge (culture, economics, geography, governance and civics, history, and individuals, groups, and interactions) and four process skills (acquiring information, analysis of data and problem solving, communication, and historical awareness) are integrated for instructional purposes. Students will utilize different methods that historians use to interpret the past, including points of view and historical context.
Academic Integrity: Plagiarism, copying another student's work, telling or asking for answers, or any other form of cheating will not be tolerated. A grade of zero will result. Unless assigned group work or specifically informed by the teacher that one may work with another student(s), one should assume that all work that is done in this class must be done on your own.
Class Attendance: It is important that students not miss this class. Lecture and class discussion will be frequent. Students should cultivate good note-taking skills during class and use the notes to study. If absent, students may copy another student's notes for the day(s) they were absent or I will be available at 7:30 a.m. if they wish to view the notes and see the pictures, charts, maps, etc. that were used in class on the SmartBoard. (This is the first year since I have had the SmartBoard that another teacher has not used my room early in the morning. I'm not sure how this will work especially if several students show up and want to view different days presentations. We may have to say first come, first served but we'll give this a try!)
Grades are weighted at the following ratio:
Tests: 40%
Participation: 10% - everyone starts out with a 100 in this category and keeps it by doing the things they should be doing! - points are lost if students are not paying attention (talking, cutting up, writing notes to friends, etc.) or sleeping (defined as eyes closed). Oral participation is desired during our note taking/discussion time but not required to keep this grade.
Assignments: 25% (in class, pop quizzes, occasional overnight homework, etc.)
Folder: 25% - This MUST be in a folder with clips and all pages to be graded must be attached in the clips. A three-ring notebook is NOT acceptable for this assignment and will not be graded. The folder will contain class notes and specific assignments. It will be graded near the end of each 4 1/2 week grading period. Notes to be copied for the notebook will be presented on the SmartBoard and will be the basis for our class discussions and become the major study guide for this class. The folder should NOT be used for other class work, drawings or other graffiti. The due date for notebooks will be announced several days in advance. Notebooks will be accepted one day late minus 10 points. They will not be accepted two days late.
Major tests are announced in advance so students should study and be prepared to take the test even if they have been absent. If they need to take a make up test the missed test will have to be made up within one week after the student returns to school unless arrangements are made otherwise with the teacher at the time the student returns to school. Make-up tests are given after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays by an assigned techer.
