Health Services

The Blount County Schools Health Services Department is responsible for school nurse coordination and training that includes:

  • Staff CPR and first aid instruction;

  • Medical emergency management;

  • 504 and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings for students with health care needs, and;

  • Teaching students to be as healthy as possible.

School nurses are charged with taking care of students who have medical needs, injuries and/or illnesses at school. Additionally, they are often involved in referral decisions for students, and assist with health screenings every year.

Each BCS school has a nurse present on most days. BCS elementary schools employ part-time Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), who are supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN) that works at the nearest middle school facility. At the high school level, each building has an RN and part-time LPN. The district also employs three LPNs who specifically work in special education classrooms as teacher’s assistants/nurse.
