We hope this newsletter finds all Mary Blount families doing well and rested from an enjoyable fall break.  The weeks have certainly flown since school began over two months ago, and we have plenty to celebrate as students have been engaged in classrooms that are kid-friendly and brain-compatible.  Much has already taken place this year and we are excited about all that is happening here.

Our 5th grade classes took an overnight field study to Wesley Woods.  The students participated in a variety of activities that correlated with our state standards about ecosystems.  The students explored the water during stream ecology, learned about animals, adaptations in understanding critters, hiked to the falls, and searched for landmarks in orienteering. They topped off the fun with a campfire that included songs, stories, and smores.  This was an incredible learning experience where students and teachers bonded and made memories to last a lifetime.

We continue our recycling program that was instituted last year. We hope you help us by donating your recyclable cans, newspapers, cardboard & mixed paper to our bins.

We also want to thank McALISTER’S DELI for hosting MBE as a fund raiser this year.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, Nov. 22nd for the annual Turkey Trot for Education (formerly Run for Education).  The Blount County Education Foundation will be sponsoring the event at Clayton Corporate Offices.  The registration fee is $10 for students and $15 for adults.  All proceeds benefit the Blount County Education Foundation which supplements Mary Blount with needed school supplies.

Also, we appreciate your help with the fall fund raiser as our PTO sold coupon books this year.  We have a few still left and may be purchased in the main office or from PTO members.

Please remember to read to or with your student at least 15 minutes every day.  Not only will it improve reading skills, it sends a powerful message that Reading is important to my parent/guardian!

Media Center, by Mrs. Bivens

All the 4th and 5th graders are clamoring for the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid #4 – Dog Days which was just released on Oct. 12th.   The saga continues in Greg Heffley’s life.  This “indoor person” is being forced out of the house into the sunshine and fresh air (against his wishes) with hilarious results.  We have these books in paperback for sale for $6.99 + tax ($7.64) for the next 2 weeks only.

The new list of nominees for the Volunteer Book Award List 2009-2010 has just been posted on the web.  There are 2 lists – one for K-3 and another for gr. 4-6.  For more info, go to the website at http://www.discoveret.org/tasl/VSBA_2009_2010.html.

Our library budget was cut (again) this year.  We are depending on our Book Fair profits to enable us to buy books, videos, and science kit materials that correlate with our curriculum standards.  The Book Fair is scheduled for two weeks again this year and will begin on Monday, Jan. 25th and run through Friday, Feb. 5th.

Art Class,by Heather Woods

With our first nine weeks behind us, the art room has seen many great art projects.  Students have created drawings, paintings, and collages.  Students have drawn paper bags, painted miniature pumpkins and gourds, and cut and glued positive and negative shapes.  The fifth grade classes have kept a sketchbook of ideas and have worked on individual projects in drawing and painting.  Many of the fifth grade projects were on display during Bear Night.  The next nine weeks will be very exciting, as the students will have the opportunity to work with a great local clay artist, Annamaria Gundlach.  She will bring great supplies, ideas, and techniques to share with the students.  Feel free to visit the Central Office this month to see more Mary Blount art! Have a great fall!

Keeping Fit, by Ms. Rosemary Jagels, PE Teacher

G-Y-M Get Yourself Moving

Dear Parents:

I need your help!  With your assistance, I would like to continue the tennis shoe recycling program at Mary Blount Elementary School.  The recycling program will help our MBES family.  I am asking that you send me tennis shoes that your child has outgrown.  Please wash the shoes before sending them to school.  The tennis shoes will be placed in boxes according to sizes.  When a child needs a pair of tennis shoes for a physical education class.  He or she will be allowed to select a pair of shoes.

The tennis shoe recycling program was a great success last year.  Thank you for helping with this project.

 Music News, by Mr. Hurst!

In music during the first nine weeks, kindergarten and 1st grade classes have been singing songs from The Learning Station and playing rhythm instruments.  2nd and 3rd grade read the chapter book "Arthur Rocks with Binky" and saw the animated episode which goes with the story.  2nd and 3rd grade also are learning songs from the new Music K-8 musical entitled "Music Class."  4th and 5th grade classes played triangles and rhythm sticks to "The Blue Danube" just like Joe Jonas did in the hit television show.  They also learned "This Land is Your Land" and "Mother Earth" for their Bear Night program.  4th and 5th grade classes are also reading the novel "The Last Holiday Concert" by Andrew Clements.  Stay tuned for the kindergarten and 1st grade performance on the second Bear Night as well as Mary Blount students who will perform for the Christmas tree lighting at the Blount County Courthouse on Thursday, December 3rd.
