Active Parenting Today:  Skill That Work

Help Get Your Child Organized for a Great School Year!

Students who are well organized are more likely to succeed in school.  Help your child get off to a great start with these ideas:

  • Label key items.  On the tag of your child's new jacket, for example, write her first name.
  • Color code.  Matching colors to subjects can make a big difference.  For example, use a blue book cover and a blue folder for math.
  •  Set up routines.  Help your child study at the same time in the same place each day.  He might even want to do his work in the same order - science first, spelling next.
  • Choose storage spots.  Have your child put her backpack in the same spot every day.  Keep pencils, pens and paper in a special study spot.
  • Clean out the backpack.  At least once a week, take everything out of your child's book bag.  Look for communications from your child's teacher.
