The Adult Education Foundation Board of Directors began this season with a July retreat to focus on the goals and needs for the 2009-2010 school year. New officers and new members were welcomed to the Foundation Board.
Several factors affect the ongoing need for support to the Adult Education program. During the 2007-2008 school year, 784 adults participated in free adult education classes, and 256 adults received their GED. These numbers represent a significant increase over the previous year.
Last year’s state funding for the GED test will not be continued; in response the Adult Education Foundation would like to offset some of the additional cost to the students. English for Speakers of Other Languages is one of the fastest growing needs in our county, and technology is increasingly important in today’s workplace. Many adults need basic computer skills to get or keep a job.
The Adult Education Foundation is preparing for these upcoming events:
- December 2009 - Festival of Trees
- December 7, 2009 - Board Meeting 6:30pm at United Way building
- December 14, 2009 - Fall GED Graduation, Heritage High School, 7pm
- March 6, 2010 - Spelling Bee, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1pm
- June 4, 2010 - Evening Fundraiser at St. Andrew's with Dr. William Beass
